Talk:GNU Hackers' Meeting
From LibrePlanet
Development for Proprietary OS
Should developers spend time portingc their software to proprietary operating systems? --> No, the audience will be proprietary users who see no problem with proprietary software. When they ask for the program, they should be informed, "You use a non-free operating system, for us to port it would be unethical." Image Apache running on only free OSs. Porting puts no pressure on developers or users to change their viewpoint. The purpose of free software is to enable users to make an ethical choice, not about the software itself. The Libre Planet groups are expected to challenge users ethically, but this is hampered by users replying, 'We can use all free/open software on proprietary systems, so why should we change, we have the best of both worlds.' We have to show there are real, tangible disadvantages to proprietary software - the 3000+ free packages they could use, but will have to make a choice, first. Blacky 12:00, 22 March 2009 (EDT)
