Foreseeing High Priority Projects list

During the last recent years I've been actively discussing the Free Software Movement strategies. I am currently a co-mantainer of one of the projects in the FSF High Priority Projects list (GNU LibreDWG). This list is very important for raising awareness on the critical areas where we are still lacking free software support. I will quickly present some suggestions of projects that I consider critical and that are currently not listed there.

  • Free development tools for reconfigurable hardware development (FPGA Tools)
  • Accessibility-enabled system since first boot
  • privacy-enabling email systems

Should there be a free software app store?

Apple's iPhone App Store iconically restricts users' and developers' freedoms, but lots of people are signing up to code for it -- even making their entire livelihoods from it.

Since the free software movement has encouraged selling free software since its beginnings, should we be thinking about app stores for free software? Would end-users pay for free software if they were asked to?

What precedents exist for this? How much free software is in existing app stores?

User-specified prices with defaults? Experiments by Radiohead and Jane Siberry

Concerns and problems

  • user inconvenience and harm to free software adoption
  • the distinctiveness of the apt-get mechanism
  • confusing users about distinctions between free and non-free software?
  • changing developers' priorities
  • conflicts over allocation of funds

the Tube Open Movie project production blog is short film production using Free software and aiming to release an open movie (all content creative commons licensed, all production files released with the movie, and all code we write released under the GPL) similar to Elephants Dream, Big Buck Bunny and Sintel produced by the Blender Institute and Blender Foundation.

The talk by Director Bassam Kurdali will start with the teaser for the project, give a quick snapshot of our current status replete with pictures and artwork and then focus on the goals of the project, both in terms of the film itself and in terms of (Free) software.

Towards a fully free computing ecosystem

A whirlwind tour through the current state of progress towards a fully free computing ecosystem, with a focus on purchasable hardware.

  • Software side: Open Source (it's nifty/better) vs. Free Software (it gives you freedom)
  • Software side: Freed Software: Linux-libre, gNewSense, Trisquel, LibreWrt
  • Hardware side: Common pitfalls: wireless, boot firmware, video
  • Hardware side: Respects your Freedom / Lemote Yeeloong
  • Hardware side: Qi Hardware / Qi Inside / Sharism Ben Nanonote
  • Web services: Franklin St Statement, Autonomo.us, Eben's "Freedom Box"

Your wrists hurt? You must be a programmer.

Guillaume Marceau ( gmarceau + fsf.org at gmail.com )

Repetitive Stress Injury is the pain you feel when you type too much. RSI is hard to treat. Joins are notoriously bad healers and overall not very well understood.

I have been a RSI sufferer for over 5-years, and I have recently made a wondrous recovery thanks to finally receiving proper treatment. I will talk about the biology of the condition and about my experience. I can already tell you the punchline: As in all matters of health, prevention works better than treatment.
